Undiagnosed Complications Suck

11:30 We met with Dr. M and he said the surgery went very well. He said that as soon as he started making cuts, James' head pushed out over an inch on it's own. Apparently your brain likes to be a certain shape. He only lost a smaller amount of blood than they expected, but still received Dad's transfusion. He also said that the metopic suture (in front) was definitely open when they pulled back the scalp, so he didn't have to do any work there. They also didn't have to cut much of the muscle at his temple, so the swelling might not be as bad as we'd expected.

12:00 We were in the ICU with James. It was incredibly hard to see him starting to wake up, and his poor little head was all wrapped. We cried, and then came to the conclusion that we were quite blessed with how well he was doing.

Picture below: After we got into the room, they transferred James to a crib. He had the nasal oxygen and the head wrap (which will come off tomorrow).

1:30 James began to stir some, then stopped and he began to have a lot of alarming symptoms, and the machines began to beep. Several doctors came in and they gave him medicine for a seizure, which it may or may not have been. They had to re-intubate him, and take him down for a CT immediately. The seizure medicine made him very sleepy, so now he'll have to stay on the breathing machine for a while.

This is what he looks like now:

3:30 Waiting for test results. This sucks.

  6. Elizabeth and Mike had to leave quickly today as her grandfather had emergency surgery. In fact, he is just now in recovery (7:16 pm). She wanted me to pass on that they are praying for you (as are many groups with prayer chains going for James). I have been calling her with your every update throughout the day. I will be bringing you guys a little picnic lunch tomorrow in her absence. Please don't say no as it is my pleasure and I have already been to the grocery. Carey and Andrew are parking a car in your drive in your absence just to give the impression that someone is at home. Elizabeth handed off your house key to me when she left. I will take care of your mail, etc. Carey and Ellie are watering. So all is well at your house. Please let me know what time you would like lunch Friday and I will be there. (913-226-1766). We all continue to pray for James and the two of you. Can't wait to hear the results of the latest scan. Call for ANYTHING!!! Love, Stacey
